What is ASIST

The training that changes
how people talk about suicide.

ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop developed by LivingWorks and delivered worldwide. It trains people to become life-assisting caregivers: people in any community, any role, who are ready and able to step in when someone may be thinking about suicide.

The workshop is built around the PAL model, the pathway for assisting life. Participants practice real conversations in small workgroups, building the confidence and skills to help keep someone safe from suicide for now, and to connect them to further support.

ASIST is part of building suicide-safer communities: places where more people are ready, willing and able to have the conversation that might save a life. Asking someone directly about suicide does not increase risk. It opens the door to helping.

What Participants Say

The training
in their own words.

"I recently used my ASIST training to do a suicide intervention. I felt much more prepared than I have done in the past, and I am pleased to say that the individual concerned is now getting the support they need."

ASIST Participant

"The workshop was a safe and thoughtful space that provided me confidence to do the work I do. It allowed me the chance to reflect on and debrief some difficult situations for the first time. I am incredibly grateful."

ASIST Participant

"Chris and Keir had a great working chemistry between them. They were regularly checking in and making sure everyone was ok due to the intensity of the course. I feel more confident in intervening and talking about suicide. If this helps me to help just one person then it will have made a difference."

ASIST Participant

"This has been the best and most valuable training I have ever been on. I found the group setting and discussions so valuable. I have definitely learned skills I will use all the time in my work and personal life."
